Dear Griff Members,

I hope you had a great 2022 summer season of golf, as we welcome autumn and wind down our season, with the leaves turning into brilliant colors, the air is fresh and cool, and the festive holidays near. 

Fall is probably my favorite time of the year to enjoy golf at the Griff. The golf course is in great shape; the greens are smooth and fast, the fairways lush, and the rough thick. We cannot thank our Golf Course Superintendent, Jay enough for all he does to keep our golf course in such great shape--especially through the hot summers.  Despite the difficulty with the heat this summer, Jay and his crew have maintained the course in superb condition. The USGA Green Team performed an evaluation of the course last month, and their report was great. Additionally, we had all the bunkers evaluated this month and expect a detailed report in a matter of weeks.

PGA Pro, Patrick Massi organized the Town-wide Men’s and Women’s Golf Tournaments the weekend of September 17.  Everyone pitched in to make for a wonderful and competitive weekend. Special thanks to Patrick's team, the great efforts by the whole staff at Cobbler North, our volunteers, and employees for their outstanding contributions.

On behalf of all of us here at the Griffith E. Harris Golf Course, I wish to express my sincere thanks to the Bruce Women's Golf Association, Greenwich Women's Golf Club, Griff Harris Men's Golf Club, and the Retired Men's Association members for their support and encouragement of our staff and maintenance crew.  The clubs are winding down their respective 2022 competitive schedules.  These great clubs offer opportunities to make lifelong friendships, and to enjoy the thrill of competitive play. 2022 was a great season! The GWGC hosted 23 tournaments and played 875 rounds of tournament golf. The most notable rounds occurred during our two majors. Congratulations go to:

Heidi Nolte, winner of the 2022 GWGC Founder’s Day Tournament, and

Susanne Weiser, 2022 GWGC Club Champion.

On September 1, Halina Pugliese had the first GWGC hole-in-one in two seasons—on number 7 from the men’s tees!! And then on October 6, Halina had a second hole-in-one on number 7!! Halina gets our congratulations and a big check from the hole-in-one pool.

GWGC also congratulates the Swing Fore Hope Committee which raised more than $20,000 for Kids In Crisis and collected 775 pairs of undies for the Undies Project. 

The GWGC season formally came to a close with the Annual Fall Meeting and Dinner on Thursday, October 13 at Cobber North. GWGC reserved tee times are continuing through the end of October for any members who would like to play.

Wow!  Our 56th season is already coming to an end after a hot, humid and dry summer.  We are all hoping for a few weeks of beautiful Fall golf with crisp air as we and compete in our two-week Member/Member Tournament.

Our first day of the Club Championship was a challenging and long grind after a rare evening of heavy rain, that limited us to cart paths only.  Congratulations to our 18-Hole Club Champion, Lee Murdoch and our Runner-up Hsiao-Lien Boardman as well as 9-Hole Club Champion, Diana Mahaney and Runner Up Petra Saichin.

We will be ending the season with our Annual Fall meeting and luncheon on to be followed by our closing day scramble on October 25.  It was great year of golf as we welcomed new members and had a lot of fun weekly tournaments.

Looking ahead to next year, maybe consider joining our 18-Holer Tuesday morning league for the 2023 season.  We have weekly league play with different TOD’s (Tournament of the Day) each week. Please visit our website www.bwgagolf.org and join us for the Opening meeting next Spring.

Have you ever found yourself in between clubs/yardages? If so, here is how to properly play and approach them correctly. 

Let’s say your 9 iron goes 90ish yards and your 8 iron goes 115ish yards in the air, but you need to carry the ball 100 yards and want it to stop around there. Very simply I want you to take the club that can go at least that yardage in the air, and in this case, it’s the 8 iron. 

I want you to grip down all the way until the end of the grip and swing your swing. That’s it!!

I see too many people gripping down just a little bit, and trying to either swing easier or trying to make a 3/4 backswing. Both of those are way too complicated to repeat and feel if you don’t practice them enough so why not take the guesswork out of it!?!?

Take more club, grip all the way down the grip and make a full swing. Keep it simple. You will be hitting more greens!!
